Mary Virginia Urban

Mary Virginia Urban, 84, of W e s t Lafayette, died at 2 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at University Place.

She was born Sept. 7, 1924, in Chicago, lll., to the late Emil and Emma McCluskey Urban.

She received her MS in Music from the University of Notre Dame.

Ms. Urban was a nun from 1948 to 1972 and then became a kindergarten through college level teacher and music director for several schools and colleges. After teaching, she joined St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delphi as choir director and organist from 1985 to 1994. Following her retirement, she went to work as the music director at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Monticello.

She was a member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament and Sisters of Saint Dominic Congregation of the Holy Rosary.

She enjoyed music and playing the piano.

Surviving are a brother, Robert Urban (wife: Alicia) of Willowbrook, Ill.; a half sister, Helen Urban of Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

A half brother, William Urban, also preceded her in death.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Church of the Blessed Sacrament. Fr. David Buckles and Fr. Dave Hellman will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service
