Tipton overwhelms Lady Oracles
The Tipton Lady Blue Devils visited Delphi Saturday with a varsity roster entirely made up of underclassmen. The six sophomores and six freshmen sprang out to a big first quarter lead and coasted the rest of the way in a 58-41 win.
Most coaches will say that teams need some upperclassmen to show the kids how to play the game and provide leadership, but this Blue Devil team is teaching itself. In winning for the eighth time in 12 games, Tipton spoiled the first game of 2009 in the DCHS gym to put the Oracles' record at 5-8 for the year.
Thanks to great shooting by Tipton, at the end of one period the Oracles were behind by ten at 19-9. Things didn't get any better later. Whitney Arion hit a trey for the Oracles to start the second period. Another Arion three and buckets by Randee Schultz and Kari Lake would be all the offense the Oracles could muster while the Blue Devils were scoring at will to lead at the half 42-19.
Though the game was out of reach Delphi did show some improvement in the second half. Delphi's Ladies managed to break through the press that had bothered them throughout the first half for some easy buckets. Jordayn Jargstorf got free enough to score six third quarter points with help from Danni Burge, who added three. Delphi had outscored Tipton 9-8 in the third quarter.
Even though the Blue Devils held an insurmountable advantage their coaching staff kept the press on in the final period. While some teams might have folded up, this version of Oracles kept playing and again outscored the visitors by a 13-8 score. Arion and Hannah Evans would lead the fourth quarter in scoring with six and three points respectively.
Arion led the Oracles in scoring with 12 with Jargstorf adding 10.
The Lady Oracles' next game is Jan. 15 at home against Clinton Central with a 6 p.m. start.
