Habitat for Humanity to build home for local veteran

Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette is currently seeking a local veteran to build a home with over the next year. To be eligible for this special project an individual or family must currently live or work in Carroll, Tippecanoe or White County and meet one of the following criteria:

.An active member of any branch of the military

.An honorably discharged veteran or the widow or widower of an honorably discharged veteran

.A combat-disabled veteran and their family

Building will begin in September 2009 and will be completed by Veteran's Day of that year. This project will provide military veterans and their families the opportunity to achieve the affordable homeownership.

Qualification requirements include a willingness to partner, the need for affordable housing and, and the ability to repay the mortgage. A family's income must be between 30% to 60% of the median income for Lafayette. For example, a family of four would earn a minimum of $17,950, while a family of four earning 60% of median would earn no more than $35,940.

Families who qualify, participate in financial and homeownership workshops, help build their home, pay a minimal down payment and purchase the house at a 25 year, 0% interest mortgage.
