Oracles return to action Friday night

By John J. Dunn Contributing sportswriter

Oracle head coach Brian Tonsoni's boys' basketball team will return to action with two home games this weekend, against Northwestern on Friday and. Rossville on Saturday.

The Oracles are anxious to return to the floor following a three-week layoff for the holidays.

Northwestern (2-3) is coached by Carroll High School graduate Jim Gish, who has compiled four consecutive winning seasons and an 84-19 record in his fifth season at Northwestern - including the 2007 Class 2A state championship. Gish inherited a team that went 4-17 during the 2003- 04 campaign and had not enjoyed a winning season since the 2000-01 campaign.

But the Tigers have lost a ton of experience to graduation this season, which should lead to a more competitive match-up for the young Oracles.

The Northwestern contest will tip-off on Friday, with the JV starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Rossville-Delphi contest is typically always an entertaining one, and this one promises to be no different coming on the heals of last season's 64-62 Oracle come-from-behind road win on a last-second steal and game-winning shot against the Hornets.

Head coach Michael Gick's Rossville team (3-5) will come to Delphi after hosting North White on Friday night, with the JV tipoff scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. Gick is 33-40 in his fourth season at Rossville.
