Response to cob fire is appreciated

On Dec. 27, Delphi Tri- Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at The Andersons Grain and Cob Mill operations northeast of Delphi.

A large cob pile was burning so all seven Carroll County fire departments were called to assist. A short time later a call was placed for additional fire departments from neighboring counties.

The fire consisted of 17 thousand tons of cob product that The Andersons sell to several different vendors for various products.

Fire departments from other counties were called or called us to ask if they could assist with the fire. The fire was called under control on Jan. 3 at 1:02 p.m. (one week from its start).

During the course of the fire, firefighters faced high winds, cold temperatures, several days of no sleep, and break downs in equipment.

It is believed that the number of fire departments on the scene at various times total at or near 46. We are checking records to make sure of this number.

The men and women of the Delphi Tri-Township VFD thank everyone who assisted in this fire operation in any way (equipment, man power or food). We also thank area merchants who assisted with food and donations.

And I thank all the Delphi Tri-Township firefighters, Delphi Tri-Township Ladies Auxiliary, The Andersons Inc. and their families for all they gave over the past week.

I am very proud of all of you and the efforts you put out, as well as all fellow firefighters from the different departments.

Dennis J. Randle, Chief, Delphi Tri-Township
