Burlington is step closer to adopting compression brakes ordinance

An ordinance prohibiting truck drivers from using their compression brakes through town passed on first reading at the Nov. 10 meeting of the Burlington Town Council.

Town attorney Justin Alter put together the ordinance that is expected to be passed on third and final reading at the council's Dec. 9 meeting.

The council will hold a work session Nov. 26 to discuss the recently completed comprehensive land use plan. County zoning administrator Kathy Mylet said that there is still time for the town to make changes prior to adopting the resolution.

Mike Wills, owner of The Dinner Bell, requested clarification on snow cleanup. He was told that the state highway department is responsible for clearing the highway and the town is responsible for clearing town streets. Property owners are responsible for their sidewalks and parking lots.

Al Jackson announced that a Burlington Forum meeting will be set soon.

The annual town Christmas Walk will be held Nov. 22 with stores and vendors open from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The town Christmas tree in front of Troy Brewster's residence will be lighted at 7 p.m.
