Opal J. Flickinger

Opal J. Flickinger, 84, of Delphi, formerly of Hessville and Lowell, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at her home in Delphi.

Born Dec. 12, 1923 in Lancaster, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Gladys Ball Hayden. Her marriage was on Sept. 29, 1946, in Hammond to Jack N. Flickinger, who preceded her in death on July 21, 1994.

She was a 1942 graduate of Hammond Tech.

Mrs. Flickinger was a partner with her husband at Flick's Tavern in Hessville which they took over from his parents in 1950 and operated the business until retirement in 1980.

She was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed bowling and was an avid sports fan.

Surviving are a daughter, Jean Howell (husband: Kevin) of Delphi; two grandchildren raised in her home, Brett Barta of Lowell and Krista Barta Hopkins of Parker, Colo.; a brother, Peter Hayden of Flossmore, Ill.; a sister, Christine Boucher (husband: Michael) of Sawyer, Mich.; two grandsons, Zachary Howell of Lafayette and Paul Howell of Delphi; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were a daughter, Jackie Barta, and son-in-law, John Barta, and a brother, Tom Hayden.

A graveside service will be held Sept. 12 at Oak Hill Cemetery, 6445 Hohman Ave., Hammond, at 11 a.m. (Central Daylight Time). Rev. Steve Miller will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Wabash & Erie Canal Association or a charity of choice. Envelopes will be available at Davidson Funeral Home in Delphi.
