Carroll soccer opens with 2 victories

Carroll Varsity Soccer opened its season last Tuesday with a new team on the schedule, North Montgomery.

The first 20 minutes was spent with each team sizing the other up until a Chase Meade goal, with exactly 20 minutes to go in the first half, put Carroll ahead off an assist from junior Michael Myer. Meade, a senior, added to the scoring with 31 seconds to go in the first half with a breakaway goal off a pass from senior Sam Parker. Carroll took a 2-0 lead into halftime while giving up no shots on goal.

Carroll junior Michael Myer got his first goal of the season 27 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick. Less than 4 minutes later North Montgomery got on the board with a goal by senior Kal Airey. The Cougars countered just one minute later with Myer getting his second goal of the game on a direct kick from about 30 yards out. North Mont junior Reece Oliver got a goal with 19 minutes to go on a follow shot off of a saved PK. The Cougars held North Mont scoreless the last 19 minutes of the game and won their season opener 4-2.

Taylor Harmon had 5 saves in goal for North Montgomery and senior Cody Abdon had 4 saves in goal for the Cougars.

Vs. Winamac

Carroll soccer had another solid outing Saturday with a 5- 0 win over Winamac. The Cougars took control just over two minutes into the game with a direct kick into the corner of the goal off the foot of Myer. About 10 minutes later Meade dribbled through the defense and put one in the net.

With just over 3 minutes to go in the first half Meade took a pass from brother Codey Meade and again put one in the net to give the Cougars a 3-0 halftime lead. Goalie Abdon had four saves in goal for the Cougars in the first half.

The Cougars came out fast in the second half with the third goal of the game by Ch. Meade less than 5 minutes into the second half. Freshman Dan Budreau finished off Cougar scoring with a penalty kick with about 15 minutes to go in the game. Abdon finished the game with 6 total saves with Winamac's Jake McKinley finishing with 11 saves.

The Cougars' next 3 games will decide the conference with next Thursday at Tri- Central, with Rossville on Sept. 2 and at Lafayette Central Catholic on Sept. 4.

Others players on this year's team are: Seniors - Justin Moffitt, Kiel Lester, Steven Arendsen, Amber Hughes and Alisha Hedrick; Sophomores -

Tyler Plank, Meagan Grace, Jacob Mullins, Zach Harness and Tyson Ovalle; and Freshmen - Jeremy Hayes, Stephen Murphy, Trey Overholser, Kate Hickner, Blake Seward and Alex Atkisson.

Team captains are Cody Abdon, Justin Moffitt and Chase Meade. The Cougars are coached by Dave Falkenberg and Gail Moffitt. Team manager is Jess Yoder.
