We love our independence

It has been a difficult first six months of 2008 for the citizens of Carroll County - budget cuts, police and emergency cuts, floods and more.

But residents should not lose sight of what is good…we live in a country where it is the right of every citizen to stand up and say their piece. They get to leave their jobs if they don't like what is going on. They get to complain if they think the people they elected to protect their tax dollars haven't.

Those who do not agree with a hog operation or a cattle factory being located near their home have a right to object in public.

Those who do not want a boat house in their neighborhood have a right to complain.

That is what we do in this country.

And it would be contrary to what we stand for to take that right away from our citizens, from those who make this great nation what it is.

When you get together with your family and friends this weekend to celebrate the holiday, remember just what holiday this is… Independence Day.

Our forefathers of long ago fought to achieve our independence from England, so we can express our opinions and make our own decisions.

So as you celebrate the 4th of July, remember that we have public meetings for citizens to become informed about the county, city, etc. We are allowed at many of these meetings to express our opinions about whatever subject matter is on the agenda. We have a right to our opinions…and so do those who don't agree with us!
