Comet staff report

The Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter will host a free family conference, "Alzheimer's Disease: Enhancing Care, Finding Humor," on May 15 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Thomas Duncan Hall, 619 Ferry Street, Lafayette.

Nationally known author and teacher David Troxel, MPH, will present "The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care." His presentation will describe the development and practice of person centered care and the "Best Friends" model that is now in use around the world. He will also share tips for enhancing care with creative activities and more effective communication. Troxel has co-authored four books on Alzheimer's care as well as numerous articles relating to Alzheimer' disease and staff development and training.

The second presentation will be "Looking for Laughs in all the Wrong Places" presented by David Parris. During the presentation, Parris explores the blessings and curses of care giving, family dynamics and the healing power of humor coupled with common sense in a setting where sense is not so common. Parris, a licensed clinical social worker, supervises clinicians at the National Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Contact Center in Chicago. He also maintains a private therapy practice.

There is no charge to attend; however a $10 donation is appreciated. Registration is required as space is limited. Call the Alzheimer's Association at 800-272-3900 to register or for more information.
