Gail Ennis had quite a surprise after the Flora Little League and Girls Softball parade on Saturday.

As president of the Girls Softball League, he had called a meeting of the parents to enlist their help in the concession stand.

As he was standing at the softball bleachers, with his back to the field, his son-in-law, Brian Downham, asked him what was out in the field.

At first Ennis didn't see anything, but when he was encouraged to look at the scoreboard, he saw it. The new sign identifies the field as the Gail Ennis Softball Field.

Gale Ann Downham was on hand to tell the crowd that the Flora Park Board and Girls Softball League named the field for her father because of all his years and hard work in softball.

Ennis said he first got involved with Little League, 41 years ago. He coached for three years and was player agent for 16 years.

He started with girls softball in 1977, coaching the "B" team. The following year, he began coaching the "A" team (high school age).

"My coaches that helped me were Diane Goubeaux and Mike Hyman," Ennis said. "Later Dick Oilar and Cindy Lesh helped coach for years.

Ennis coached Flora and Logansport girls for 26 years, and has been associated with the Flora girls league for 31 years. He has several trophies that the girls have won over the years.

Ennis also has been on the Flora Park Board since 1982 and is the current president. He was instrumental in getting the girls diamond built at the park. He also was involved in getting softball started at Carroll High School, and coached there for about 10 years.

"I played softball myself for a semi-pro team in Kokomo for 16 years, besides coaching the girls," Ennis said. "I love softball."

He thanked the Park Board, Girls Softball League, his family, and anyone else who had a hand in naming the field for him.

"It choked me up to get honored this way," he said.
