Robert Eugene Harter Robert Eugene "Gene" Harter, 75, of Camden, died at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette. He was born on May 20, 1932, in Muncie, to Clifford Greene and Vertie (unknown) and was adopted at age four by Willis and Eva Witter Harter. He attended school in Burlington and Dania, Fla. His marriage was to Doris Jean Oyler on Dec. 8, 1951, at Lower Deer Creek Church of the Brethren, rural Camden. She survives. Mr. Harter served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1950 to 1954. He and his family moved in November 1959 to Thomasville, Ga., where he worked as a milk route deliverer. They returned to Indiana in September 1963. He then worked as a die caster/troubleshooter at Chrysler Die Casting, Kokomo, retiring in 1991. Mr. Harter was a member of Lower Deer Creek Church of the Brethren. He loved mowing his yard and planting his garden, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving with his wife are two sons, Jeffrey Harter (wife: Joyce) and John Harter, all of Camden; two daughters, Karen Stevens (husband: Doug) of Burnetttsville and Katherine Forgey (husband: Michael) of Young America; nine grandsons, Shawn Harter and Ryan Harter, both of Camden, Carey Stevens of Monticello, Ben Stevens, Dougy Stevens and Jacob Stevens, all of Burnettsville, Cody Harter of Bringhurst, and Seth Forgey and Spenser Forgey, both of Young America; two granddaughters, Savannah Forgey and Shelbi Forgey, both of Young America; one greatgrandson, Jackson Harter; and one great-granddaughter, Mariah Moore. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karla Ann; a son, James Lloyd Harter; his parents; and two brothers, Jack Harter and Max Harter. Services were held April 23 at Lower Deer Creek Church of the Brethren, 741E. CR 300N., Camden. Pastor Guy Studebaker will officiate. Burial was at Musselman Cemetery, near Camden. Memorials may be made to the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, 429 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Ste. 201, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Assisting the family with arrangements was Cree Funeral Home, Camden. |
