Jack Sanders Art Show begins this weekend
By Kevin Schnepp Staff writer

The 2008 Jack Sanders Art Show, a 52-year tradition held at Delphi Community High School, is this weekend. Organizer Judi Brummett said this year's exhibit will be smaller than previous years but will still offer a taste of student and local community artists and their works.

The art show will be open Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday during regular school hours. It will remain open Tuesday evening, the final day of the exhibit, so those who attend a poetry slam to be held that night in the Little Theatre may experience the displays.

The show will feature two and three-dimensional art work displayed in all mediums by local artists, art club members, students and professionals.

Brummett told the Comet last week there will be both new and returning artists to this year's show.

Returning artists include Rena Brouwer (watercolors), Alan McConnell (photography), Terry Lacy (watercolor and handmade paper art), and Mary Firestone (ceramics).

New artists will include Tammy McCain, who will show her jewelry, and Ronald Burgess, a pastel artist who has studied under Bob Heger, will present some of his works.

Three local artists, Harry Idle (painting), Aaron Hutsell (photography), and Brummett (watercolors), will be part of the show. The Delphi Art club will also present their creations.

A total of 12 seniors will display their art on senior boards in the commons and the area around the library. Works by underclassmen can also be viewed in the library.

Those involved in the show's organization are Brummett, part-time high school art teacher Robin Coyner, members of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Sandy Cripe and Julia Leahy, who will volunteer their time during the Friday and Saturday events, and others who will monitor and care for any purchases for the DCSC Fine Arts Council.

Brummett said she received support from school administrators as she pieced together this year's exhibit.

"(High school principal Barry) Stone, superintendent (Ralph) Walker and school board members have supported every aspect of this show and are willing to help in any way," Brummett told the Comet Friday. "My senior students have been an incredible help. They took care of taking the posters around town and to the area businesses to advertise the show."

Brummett encouraged members of the community to visit the event and support artists despite changes to the art show's appearance.

"I hope everyone takes note of the different time schedule of the revised art show," she concluded. "Hopefully the changes will not keep people away, but entice them to come and hopefully next year the other teachers will be back on board when we display at the Interpretive Center."
