Looking Back
Wilson Bridge on 300N was closed Thursday, ending preservation's hopes of possibly rehabilitating the 100-year - old iron truss structure. The closing was the result of an on-site investigation by Fred Peterson, Carroll County engineer, and Tom Schnetzer of Beam, Longest and Neff, consulting engineers. The bridge was closed because of stress cracks in the tension members, rusted areas in the top and lower cord connections, and end post deterioration at the bearings, according to Peterson. The only things preservations can hope for now are to convince the Commissioners to not radically change the approaches to the proposed replacement bridge, which will sacrifice three acres of woodland, and/or to possibly keep the old bridge for pedestrian use only. 25 YEARS AGO Although the rooms lack ceiling tiles and the paint is fresh, Carroll Jr. Sr. High School students moved from their portable classrooms into the Jr. Sr. High wing this past week. Because the board of the Carroll consolidated School Corporation did not want construction work done while classes were in session, workers placed steel in the courtyard area in the middle of the building Saturday and Sunday, both cold, snowy days. The approximate 75x85 area will encompass classroom, media center, work and conference rooms. 50 YEARS AGO Camden captured a three-way track meet last Thursday from Burlington and Flora.
