Looking Back 10 YEARS AGO The Scout cabin at Flora community Park has undergone radical changes in the past few months, both inside and outside. The cabin size has increased by more than 50% and it now has running water. A 24'x40' meeting room is housed in the old structure. Added to the front is an 8'x16' addition, and to the back a 16'x24' addition. New to the structure are kitchen facilities, a handicap restroom, an office for the Scoutmaster, utility room, closet and storage room. The exterior has a new roof, log trim on the front and the rest is sided with rough sawed cedar. Air conditioning will also be added. 25 YEARS AGO Reports are that Ehrman's Dinner Bell in Burlington is making a habit of feeding basketball teams the past few weeks. It all began when DePauw University stopped enroute to a game at Manchester College. Then it was the Clinton Central Bulldogs, who had just won the Frankfort Sectional, and Carrolls Cougars. Brent Ehrman, a former Cougar star, is a member of the DPU varsity. The Bachelor Run Church of the Brethren won the 1983 dartball championship during second round playoffs. Members include Tom Allbaugh, Bob Allbaugh, Bob Reames, Dana Hood, Jim Allbaugh, Jerry Sibbitt, Steve Ruemler, Frank Hood, and John Allbaugh. Tourney runners-up were the Delphi Christian church. 50 YEARS AGO At approximately 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Carroll county sheriff, Calvin Carey was shot in the abdomen region with his own gun by one of the prisoners. At the same time, deputy sheriff, John Miller, was strangled and beaten. The two men were pushed from the sheriff's car by two escaping prisoners. The two men and their 14-yearold wives were honeymooning in a cabin at a motel just northeast of Lafayette when the occupants of the next cabin overheard them recounting the burglary of several schools. They summoned the State police who then took them to the Lafayette state police post for questioning. Sheriff Carey and Deputy Miller were called to take part in the interrogation and return them to Carroll county. Both the sheriff and deputy are recovering from their injuries. A manhunt by the city police was successful in the escapees' capture. 75 YEARS AGO Eighteen Indiana cities will step down to the status of towns at noon of the first Monday in January, 1934, under the terms of the city reclassification act passed by the recent general assembly. The reclassification law provides that all cities of less than 3,000 population shall revert to town status. That affects Delphi. While no official notification has been received, it is generally believed that under the town classification, the school board as at present constituted will be abolished and that the township trustees will assume full management of the school, the same as in the remainder of the townships in the county. The chief of police will become the marshal. Whatever else may be said for the law, which is none too popular with the general public, it will be necessary to hold an election every two instead of four years. 100 YEARS AGO At their regular meeting Monday night was the time set by the Town Board for receiving bids for the paving of a part of Center, Columbia, Main and Walnut streets with brick.
After the bids were filed, M.E. Foley appeared before the board as attorney for the Vandalia Railroad Co., and gave notice to the Board and all bidders that if the contract was let, suit would immediately be brought against the town and successful bidder to enjoin them from proceeding with the work. The stand taken by the Vandalia was that a part of the proceedings for the improvement were illegal and that they would refuse payment of their assessments unless all procedures were legal. As the Town Board did not care to hunt any trouble all bids were rejected. |
