Looking Back
A new commercial center may be on the horizon for Delphi. At the Area Plan Commission meeting, the preliminary plat for a 32-acre business park was accepted. The proposed location is on U.S. 421, south of Delphi, near Indiana Packers and Express Car Wash. The park, Delphi Commercial Park, as proposed by the developer, Concord Corner, Inc., would be split into 13 lots initially. Names of businesses interested in the park have not been released to the public, but would include retail stores and a warehouse. According to Executive Director Bill Brown of Carroll County Economic Development Commission, a business park area would provide an excellent opportunity for Delphi. One of the yet unnamed stores would employ as many as 50 people. 25 YEARS AGO As mercury climbed into the 70's last week, area farmers took advantage of the early thaw and broke ground the first week of March. Keeping busy is part of Eve Davidson's daily regimen to keep active during her retirement. She received the honor of "Sagamore of the Wabash" for her service to the Governor's Advisory Board for the Indiana Veterans Advisory Home. Governor Robert D. Orr appointed Lee R. Thompson of Delphi, as judge of Delphi City Court. Sunday, March 27, will be "Bill Perigo Day" in Delphi to honor Perigo and his family after his induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on March 24. 50 YEARS AGO The alarm box at the Camden Bank, works. And what's more, the sheriff's department reacts to it with dispatch. Sheriff Sparkey Carey can testify to this as the result of a speedy departure from town last Friday noon. Sirens screaming and engine racing, the sheriff took off for Camden in answer to a message that the bank had been robbed. With all this activity going one, it was a let-down to find that someone in the bank had tripped the alarm accidentally. Bob Hall and Bob Pearson brought back the evidence that fishing is good in Florida. They caught 440 pounds while deep sea fishing near Homestead, with a variety of kinds including a 33 pound Grouper and several 15 to 18 pounders. 75 YEARS AGO It is the expectation of the Union State Bank, Delphi's only financial institution, and other Carroll county banks that they will reopen for a resumption of banking operations next Friday morning. "As far as we can foresee," said Chas. B. Shaffer, president of the bank, yesterday forenoon, "we will resume banking operations at the usual time for opening business Friday morning. "We do not know under what restrictions we will be permitted to resume business. We are holding ourselves in readiness, however, to begin rendering such banking service as may be authorized, beginning at the time mentioned. "That in the interim between now and then some plan of operations will have been worked out in Washington for adoption by banks generally, we think we are safe in assuming. We know nothing as yet, of course, as to what the details of that plan will be. 100 YEARS AGO At the regular monthly meeting of the stockholders of the Camden Co-operative Telephone Company much business of importance was disposed of.
The trustees were instructed to buy a home for the telephone company. In all probability a lot will be bought and a building suitable for the business will be built thereon. The salary of the secretary was raised from $20 to $60 per year and he was allowed $40 for extra work last year. |
