CES receives RIF grant for free books
Comet staff report

Carroll Elementary School has received a Reading Is Fundamental grant.

A RIF grant is a national grant that gives free books to students. Qualifying for this grant is based on a school's population of students participating in the free and reduced lunch program.

The school has received $1,500. Seventy-five percent is paid by the grant and 25 percent is paid by the school corporation.

This year's grant is giving free books to all kindergarten through second grade students. Each child will receive three free books. One book will be given at each of three school celebrations.

The theme for the RIF celebrations is "Everywhere is a good spot to read!"

Kathy Shuler, reading specialist, announces the following plans for the celebrations:

February 15 will be a "Tropical Day." Students will wear "tropical" dress and will be treated to a story called "Moe, the Tropical Dog."

March 21 will be a guest reader day. The guests will wear costumes related to the story they read. For example, a person dressed as a chicken will read "The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza."

The third celebration, on April 23, will be called "All Aboard." The plan is for the students to take a trip around the parking lot in the Delphi Trolley and to hear a story while aboard the trolley.
