Cougars can't stop Tigers
By Greg Hoffman Contributing sportswriter

A ranked Northwestern basketball team came to Carroll last Friday night and quickly took care of business, easily defeating the host Cougars 63- 38.

To stay with a team of Northwestern's quality and ability, a team has to take care of the basketball and Carroll did not. The Cougars had too many unforced errors early and by the end of the game had accumulated 25 turnovers.

The Cougars stayed with the Tigers in the first quarter and part of the second. They played good defense and took care of the ball. Offensively, they had 6 points from Brad Benson and a trey from Jacob Craig. At the end of the first quarter, the Cougars were down by only three, 12-9. Back-to-back treys by Craig pulled the Cougars to within one at 16-15, but this was too close for Northwestern who scored the final 7 points of the half to go up 23-15.

The Tigers extended their lead to 45-29 after three and outscored the Cougars 40-23 in the second half. Carroll's 15 turnovers in the second half limited them to only 16 attempts at the basket in the half.

Craig led all scorers with 14 points. Benson added 10 on 5 of 5 shooting from the field. Both teams shot well from the field. The Cougars hit 15 of 31 (.484%), while the Tigers hit 26 of 48 (.542%).

The Cougars will have a pair of home games this weekend. Friday night will be Homecoming and county rival Delphi (5-10) will be the opponent. Carroll leads the series 30-21. Saturday's opponent will be Hoosier Heartland Conference foe Clinton Prairie. Prairie beat the Cougars earlier this season, 56-55, in the Clinton Central Holiday Tourney. Carroll leads this series 45-28.

FFA hog roast

The Carroll FFA Chapter is sponsoring a hog roast in the high school cafeteria from 5 to 6:30 p.m. before Friday's homecoming game. Proceeds will go to the FFA dairy team's trip to the Royal Highland Show in Scotland this summer. Tickets are available by calling 967-4157 (high school), 765- 427-7253, or email, mkeown@ carroll.k12.in.us.

JV Tigers win

Visiting Northwestern downed Carroll's JV 45-30. The young Cougars (9-4) never led in this one as the Tigers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and were up by 13, 18-5, after one.

Northwestern used an 8-2 run to start the second quarter and by half-time were up 21-12. The Cougars settled down in the third quarter and pulled to within 10 at 33-23 with a 10-2 run. By half-time they were still down by 10, 35-25. A trey by Kyle Geheb closed the gap to 7, 35-28, but Northwestern scored 10 points to Carroll's 2 to close the game for the win.

Geheb led Carroll with 10 points. Jordan Brumbaugh and Drew Yoder had 6 each.
