Looking Back
Salin Bank & Trust will be closing its bank at Camden this spring, according to Bill Salin. He said the exact date has not been set. A monitoring of banking activity indicates that the majority of customers who originally opened accounts in Camden are now banking at other Salin locations. He attributed this to most residents being employed outside of Camden. Burlington Town Council has taken the first step into investigating the feasibility and public opinion of an annexation campaign. Areas being considered for annexation include property near Burlington Park, the sewage treatment plant and land near the southwest edge of town. 25 YEARS AGO The twelve apartments and community center addition to Camden's Senior Citizen Housing complex are completed and ready for occupancy. The 20 by 32 foot one bedroom apartments feature electric heat and air conditioning. The new community center measures 44x28 foot and replaces the converted apartment from Phase I which was used as a lounge and laundry room. The new center includes a lounge, laundry room, kitchenette, storage area and restrooms. Shop locally! You're not just spending money, you're investing it. Part of every dollar you spend locally is returned to your community in taxes, contributions to local charities and employee salaries. There's no need to roam, the best shopping's here at home!! 50 YEARS AGO A new police car was purchased by the City Council Monday night. The bid of Lahr Motors for a Ford was accepted from the six bids submitted. The bids were based on the trade-in of a Pontiac used the past eleven months with more than 40,000 miles use. The two lowest bids were submitted by Paul Johnson on a Studebaker at $300 and Coghill Pontiac Sales on a Pontiac at $450. The local Tri Kappa Chapter sponsored the project for the Mental Health Association. 75 YEARS AGO A large crowd attended the county spelling contest at the Camden opera house. The number was estimated as between 400 and 500. The local sectional tourney will be held this year at Flora, according to word from Indianapolis. The Regional tourney will be played at Logansport, as usual. Sectional tourney admission prices were lowered from 40 cents to 35 cents for single admission. There also will be a reduction in sectional season tickets. Four-session tickets will sell for $1. 100 YEARS AGO Eighty-three years ago last Sunday, there settled in Carroll county the first white family. It was the family of Abner Robinson, his wife and sister, Sarah Robinson. The farm is now owned by Gen. R.H. Milroy. Perhaps the first white settler was Henry Robinson, Abner's father, who bought the homestead of the government on Dec. 21, 1824, and with his sons and others cut a road through the wilderness and built a cabin, which was first occupied as a family home by his son and daughter.
Abner Robinson was the first postmaster of the county. |
