Carroll, Delphi split meets

Carroll County's swim teams split, with Carroll's ladies winning 107-78 and Delphi's boys on top, 102-73.

Mara Burton and Arielle Brosman picked up wins for Delphi while Carroll was led by Katilyn Brewster's four wins as Emma Cottrell picked up three firsts; Valerie Allbaugh, Hannah Brewster, Emma Cottrell, Emily Schneckloth, Shelby Spray and Hannah Brewster each collected two wins, and Heather Delon and Stephanie Strawcutter each had one win.

On the boys' side Brock Richardson and Corey Johnson picked up wins for the Cougars. Delphi was led by Andrew Burton's four wins, and Matt Keen's three firsts. Brent Kremer, Alex Price, Jared Kelley and Andy Flora each had two firsts and Andrew Hall and Jeremy Sterrett picked up a win apiece.

Carroll 7th girls open with 3 wins

The Carroll 7th grade girls opened their basketball season with three straight wins. They defeated Caston 24-13, with Paige Spesard leading the way with 10 points and 4 rebounds. Madison Welsh contributed 6 points and 5 rebounds.

The Lady Cougars then took two games from Northwestern. In the first game Kaitlin Ragan led the way with 13 points in the 31-20 win. In the second game Katelyn Baldwin scored 10 points leading the Lady Cougars to a 29-6 win.

Oracle wrestlers place in 9-10 tourney

The JV wrestlers from Delphi traveled to Rensselaer over the weekend to compete in their freshman-sophomore tournament.

Top finishers for the Oracles were: At 103 lbs., Blake Price finished second for ninth graders. Also finishing second was freshman Roy Anderson at 152. Freshman Derek Bradshaw finished third at 160. The Oracles had two fourth place finishers in Kyle Lashley at 145 for sophomores and at 135, freshman Dayton Rummell. Spenser Conner won a match but did not place in the tournament at freshman 140.

In the tournament freshman wrestled against freshman and sophomores wrestled against sophomores. There were 23 teams represented in the tournament.

Carroll 7th beats Delphi

The seventh grade county rivalry game matched two good squads. Delphi entered with a 9-5 record, while Carroll's was 8- 4. The Cougars, playing one of their best games, defeated the host Oracles 53-43.

The Cougars used balanced scoring as three players were in double figures. Taylor Downham led with 17, followed by Eric Miller and Brady Wiles with 15 and 12, respectively. Downham had a double-double, collecting 11 rebounds. Miller had a good all-around game with 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 assists. Logan Gaines handed out 5 assists and Wiles and Downham each had 3 steals.

Cole Murray led Delphi with 23 points.

Despite 22 errors, the Cougar B-squad defeated a good Delphi team 37-27. Jay Hodson led the offense with 14 points, while Brian Keith and Tallis Bowers chipped in with 7 points each. Keith also had 10 rebounds. Hodson had 3 steals and Bowers, 3 assists. Matt Henderson contributed with 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

Vs. Clinton Central

The Cougars totally outmatched the visiting Clinton Central Bulldogs, winning easily 53-19. Again balanced scoring was the key as all five starters had at least 6 points while playing just a little over half the game. Miller had 13, Downham and Ryan Spesard 10 each. Gaines and Wiles had 7 and 5 assists, respectively. The Cougars displayed unselfishness in finding the open man. Gaines and Miller each had 3 steals.

Vs. Pioneer

The young Cougars met a buzzsaw at Pioneer, losing to the host Panthers 46-24. Leading Carroll in scoring was Miller with 12 points. Downham had 5 rebounds and Gaines handed out 3 assists.

Carroll's B-squad finished off an undefeated 10-0 season with an easy 44-12 triumph over Pioneer. The Cougars used balanced scoring as Hodson again led in scoring. He was followed by Jacob Bush with 8 points. Trevor Ayres, Neil Benson and Henderson each had 6. Henderson had 8 rebounds, while Keith contributed 6 boards and 3 steals. Bowers had a good all-around game with 4 steals, 3 assists and 4 rebounds. Ayres had 4 steals, Bush 3 assists, and Hodson 6 caroms.
