Looking Back
Last Thursday night, Mayor Sam Deiwert presided over a public meeting to present information concerning the City of Delphi's rapidly declining water supply. Water problems came to light as early as 1986 when several private, domestic wells began to fail. Superintendent John Sayers announces at last week's Carroll school board meeting that Carroll Elementary is a 4-star school in the state. A Carroll County historic bridge coalition was formed when a group of 15 people met in Delphi. This is the first such county coalition in the state, according to Mark Dollase of Historic Landmarks Foundation. 25 YEARS AGO Absolute bedlam reigned Friday night when the Frankfort Hot Dogs came to Delphi expecting another win. But it wasn't to be as the Oracles won easily, 88-77, for their 9th win in 10 games. A challenge from Delphi Community High School students resulted in an adult cheer block for the first time. When the school superintendent, board members and longtime Oracle fans led cheers and tried to beat the youth, the result completely overcame the visitors. Coach Mike Jones could not have been happier. Comments were that it was just like a Sectional Championship. 50 YEARS AGO Time flew back more than 20 years Friday night at the Delphi Armory when one of the spectators at the basketball game was Elmer Posey. He had accompanied his son, who was one of he officials, here from Muncie. The elder Posey also was a good referee in his younger days and he takes pride in having refereed, with Hugh Vandiver, the longest high school game ever played, the famous seven overtimes in a sectional tournament in the Delphi Armory in 1935. Camden won from Delphi in that overtime. The situation brought about a rule change the next season so the Delphi-Camden game stands as an all-time record on the books. 75 YEARS AGO The Democratic national committee spent over $1,000,000 to elect Roosevelt and Garner. The state fair board has decided to charge 25 cents admission after 6:00 p.m. at this year's state fair. Parking automobiles will cost 25 cents instead of 50 cents. The Carroll county War Mothers enjoyed a most delightful dinner meeting at the home of Mrs. Carrie Jones in Delphi. Twenty ladies were present. Work continued on the quilt which is being pieced to send to one of the soldiers' homes. A number of the members also turned in pillow slips and tray cloths which they had made for the hospital. 100 YEARS AGO According to figures compiled by the Rev. F.S. Shumaker, Supt. Of the anti-saloon league, the temperance movement in Indiana has made remarkable strides during the past year. 600 saloons have been driven from the state. There are now twelve "dry" counties in Indiana and 29 "dry" county seat towns, eight of the latter being ranked as cities. The townships which have banished saloons during the year number 183, and in addition to this seventeen wards in the cities of the state have used the blanket remonstrance, and several city councils have declared residence districts, and driven saloons from the territory so classed. |
