Tri Kappa to award scholarships to qualifying students The state organization of Tri Kappa will award a variety of scholarships to college students throughout the state this spring. Each scholarship awarded is for $1,000. Scholarship chairman Cathy Berkshire of Delphi Tri Kappa is seeking applicants to sponsor for an academic scholarship given to students from each of 12 provinces in Indiana. Additional scholarships will be awarded if funds are available. Each chapter may sponsor one applicant for each type of scholarship. Any full-time student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate or graduate program, who has completed at least one academic year, may apply. Criteria used by the Tri Kappa selection committee are academic achievement, strong goals, extracurricular activities, work experience, and volunteer service. "Our area boasts numerous college students who are talented and would qualify for these scholarships," said Berkshire. "We are hopeful that those students will be brought to our attention so we may begin the process of submitting an application for the state Tri Kappa scholarships. Two $1,000 Key Scholarships are available to two students throughout the state. These scholarships are directed to students who have no previous degree beyond high school and have had a lapse in their education for at least five years. Any student enrolled in an accredited school offering an associate or baccalaureate degree, who has completed at least one semester, may apply. Criteria used by the Tri Kappa selection committee are strong goals, work experience, and volunteer service since high school. Two Fine Arts Scholarships will be awarded to a student majoring in an art, dance, drama or music (performance, visual-graphic or computer-generated art, or educator). Students must be enrolled in an accredited degree program. The Twanette Nutter Fleming Music Award is a scholarship which stipulates that the applicant must be enrolled in a fully accredited course of study leading to a degree to teach music in the public schools. Students wishing to apply for any of these scholarships are encouraged to contact Berkshire at 574-967-4799. The Tri Kappa Scholarship Committee will meet in mid- April to select the recipients. In addition to the state scholarships, Delphi Tri Kappa Chapter (Gamma Alpha) also provides local scholarships. The number of local scholarships and amounts varies. Applications for these scholarships are available from Berkshire or the Delphi Community High School Guidance Department. |
