Commissioners rethink drainage board make-up
Historically the three Carroll County Commissioners have served on the drainage board. However after receiving news from the county council the pay for the position was reduced for the second time, at least one commissioner decided he would no longer serve.
"I'm pretty ticked about getting cut to $15 (per meeting)," Bill Brown announced at the Monday morning meeting. "I have no intention of serving on the drainage board next year."
Brown said his decision was not about the amount of money but about the principle involved in the council's decision to reduce the appropriation.
Commissioners' president Loren Hylton said board members spend considerable time working on the drainage board matters between meetings. He said there was no extra compensation for that time.
"This gives us an opportunity to make a change in the structure of the board," he said.
Brown suggested out-going commissioner and current drainage board president George Mears be appointed to serve on the board in 2009. Mears said he would think about the appointment but thought incoming commissioner Pat Clawson would also be a good candidate.
"It's a great way to break in the new guy," he said. "What does he look like?"
Other business
Mears said Carroll County Soil and Water was involved in the monitoring of the drains near the inactive construction site of the Boerman Dairy south of Culter. He said he received a report there could be fines levied by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) because of the manner in which the construction was halted as it relates to surrounding drains and runoffs.
"We're being represented by our county," Mears said.
County surveyor Wayne Chapman did not attend the meeting.
The next meeting will be Jan. 5 at 8:30 a.m.
