Comet staff report

Nearly three years after the Medicare Prescription Drug Program (Medicare Part D) was launched, the Medicare Rx Access Network of Indiana is encouraging Hoosiers to learn about their options during the open enrollment period.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) report that 84 percent of Hoosier Medicare beneficiaries have voluntarily signed up for prescription drug coverage. During the open enrollment period of Nov. 15 to Dec. 31, 2008, Indiana's access network is hosting and participating in events across Indiana to help Hoosiers (both existing Medicare Part D participants and those new to the program) understand their options.

Medicare Rx Access Network will hold a free Medicare Part D enrollment event on Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Carroll County Senior & Family Services, 700 N. Washington, Delphi.

Prescription drug coverage is available to everyone on Medicare, regardless of income or type of coverage received. Plans vary from year-to-year, and Hoosier beneficiaries are encouraged to compare available plans to make the best decision.

Beneficiaries should bring the following information to the event: Red, white and blue Medicare card; name of current plan; list of the names and dosages of current prescriptions; and local pharmacy information.

Beyond this event, beneficiaries and their family members with enrollment and coverage questions can get assistance through a number of local, state and federal resources. Help is available by calling 1-800-252-9240 to connect with local Area Agencies on Aging, 1-800-452- 4800 to reach the Indiana State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or 1-800- MEDICARE for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. Beneficiaries can also visit www.iaaaa.org, www.in.gov/idoi/2399.htm or www.Medicare.gov.
