Environmentally-friendly holiday reminders
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is encouraging Hoosiers to reduce, reuse and purchase more recycled-content products as part of their holiday plans.
"We're encouraging Hoosiers to consider protecting the environment while saving money as they engage in their holiday activities," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "IDEM's Web site is a great place to learn about some good ideas for reusing, reducing and recycling."
Some environmentallyfriendly tips: • Plan ahead. Before heading out to the stores, consider bringing reusable bags in which to put purchases to avoiding filling landfills with plastic bags. • Purchase a locally-grown tree. If you will be using a real tree this year, consider purchasing one that is locallygrown. Less distance traveled means using less gasoline and other resources, which will help limit air emissions. • Select environmentallyfriendly products. Consider purchasing gifts that are made from recycled materials or that can be recycled. Additionally, consider giving a gift that doesn't require a lot of packing, such as memberships to a zoo or museum. • Limit the amount of time you leave your decorative lights burning. Putting your lights on a timer will minimize your electricity usage and provide a hassle-free way for you to enjoy your decorations. Pair that with energyefficient and long lasting Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights, and your pocketbook will thank you.
