Carroll wrestlers open season at tournament

Photo provided The Carroll Cougar wrestling team competed in its first matches of the season at a tournament Saturday at Taylor High School. Also present were teams from Mississinewa, Taylor, Grant, Wabash, Eastern, and Madison.
Though a young team consisting mostly of freshmen and sophomores, Carroll wrestlers as a whole did well. Senior wrestler Josh Holda wrestled in the 189-pound weight class with a 3-2 record. Sophomore Montana Gangwer wrestled 4-1 in the 152-lb class. Freshman wrestler Trey Overholser unfortunately finished early in the tournament due to a leg injury in his fourth match, but finished with a 3-1 record. Overholser had the fastest takedown in his first wrestling match ever, 10 seconds.
Other awards given were to Cody Kelly, a sophomore wrestling at 135 lbs, who received his team's One Bad Cat Award. Junior Joey Prater, wrestling at 160 lbs,, received the fastest pin with 10 seconds.
Senior wrestler Chase Meade could not attend due to a soccer showcase. He is expected to compete at the next meet.
Upcoming meets include: North White on Monday and at home versus Delphi Dec. 2.
