Alexis, Janet, Gil and Austin Smith Alexis, Janet, Gil and Austin Smith Gil and Janet Smith and their children, Alexis 13 and Austin eight, were recognized Nov. 19 with the 2008 Distinguished Family of the Year Award for their outstanding accomplishments and service to the community.

The Distinguished Family Award, presented annually by Family Services, Inc., is based on how a family works together to develop the 40 Assets necessary for children to grow into healthy, caring, productive and responsible adults. The 40 Assets serve as a guide to creating a strong family.

According to program information, Family Services gave the award as part of National Family Week, celebrated the week of Thanksgiving. The theme for this year was "Connections Count."

According to Family Services, children live better lives when their families are strong and live in communities that connect them to support networks. By providing guidance and unconditional love, parents shape the character of their children. The Smiths embody the attributes of a strong family.

"The family, we're all active members of the Delphi United Methodist Church," Janet Smith said.

"I am a member of Rotary, Psi Iota Xi, the Delphi Library Board and Educational Foundation Board for Delphi Community Schools."

"Gil is a member of the Election Board, Lions Club and other civic groups. Both of us serve on the Board of Directors for the Family Health Clinic. We are also active foster parents."

Janet said the family knew ahead of time about the award because they were notified through a letter.

"We received notification by mail in October, but we did not know what to expect."

"Jan Mullen of Frankfort, a former co-worker of Gil's, nominated us for the award." Janet continued.

"The application asks for about a paragraph of written information, but Jan wrote four pages. It was very humbling."
