Delphi Community Elementary School became part of history Nov. 14 when students' personal signatures were launched on the Space Shuttle Endeavor as part of NASA's Space Shuttle mission STS-126. The shuttle docked Nov. 20 during the tenth anniversary of the Space Station.

DCES students joined over 500,00 students from around the world last May in signing giant "Space Day" posters. The signatures were downloaded onto a disc and given to the crew to fly on board the shuttle.

According to a NASA and Lockheed Martin press release, "Student Signatures in Space (S3)" is part of the award-winning 'Space Day' educational initiative which was designed to stimulate young people's interest in space and technical studies."

"It is an exciting mission that is sure to pique students' interest as they follow the travels of their signatures," Barbara Reinike, Space Day program manager, said.

The poster signed by DCES students will be returned and placed on permanent display at the school along with an official NASA flight certification verifying that the signatures flew in space. A signed photo of the STS-126 crew will also be sent for display.
