Lois Groninger Powlen, 68, of Delphi, died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at Monticello Healthcare Center. She had been a patient there one day and had battled pancreatic cancer the past eight months.

Born Oct. 15, 1940, in Logansport, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Kathalene Jacoby Groninger. Her marriage was on Dec. 29, 1962, in Burrows, to Carl James "Jim" Powlen, who survives.

She attended, played the organ and sang in, the church choir at the First Presbyterian Church in Delphi.

Mrs. Powlen formerly belonged to Tri Kappa sorority. She and her husband belonged to the JUNTO dinner club and the Lafayette Indiana Historic Auto Club, L.I.H.A.C.

She made thousands of hand-painted silhouettes, using the person's name for graduations, sports, births and weddings.

Mrs. Powlen was part of a duet the "Senior Class," singing at nursing homes, parades and festivals.

She truly loved her husband, two daughters, two sons, her 12 grandchildren and all of her extended family.

Surviving are two daughters, Pam Downey (husband: Trent) of Medina, Ohio, and Kathy Zink (husband: Jon) of Delphi; two sons, Brad Powlen (wife: Elyce) of Burrows and Craig Powlen (wife: Jenna) of Lafayette; a sister, Joanne Ratcliff (husband: Dean) of Rockfield; a brother, Lowell Groninger (wife: Donna) of Baltimore, Md.; and 12 grandchildren.
