The original day of honor was known as Armistice Day, created in 1926. In 1954, the day was changed to Veterans Day.
Carroll chose to have 16 veterans from the various branches of the military come to be recognized and honored by the students. The tradition was started last year when a different group of veterans was honored.
The program included patriotic music, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem. Principal Charles Huckstep told about experiences at the Viet Nam Wall recently when he accompanied the Senior Class to Washington, D.C.
The veterans were then called to the stage area as a group, and social studies teacher Glen Dillman read brief biographies of the sixteen. The group included father and son and husband and wife veterans.
The program ended with the playing of taps by band teacher Don Pettit. As the veterans left the auditorium, they were applauded by the students.
