Veterans Day observances are set around county

Veterans Day will be observed Nov. 11 in Delphi with ceremonies conducted at the local schools and the Carroll County Courthouse, in Camden on Nov. 9, and in Burlington Nov. 15.

Delphi

Delphi Community Elementary School will present "This Is America" at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium. Former principal and veteran, Steven E. Carroll, will lead opening ceremonies which include a presentation of the "colors," a rifle salute, and playing of "Taps" by members of the American Legion. Students in the fifth grade will present a patriotic concert and SFC John Adams will speak about the meaning of Veterans' Day. All Carroll County veterans are invited to attend.

Delphi Community High School and Middle School will mark the observance from 1:30 to 2 p.m. in the DCHS gymnasium. Students in grades 6 to 12 will attend a program by the American Legion and VFW color guard presenting the flag and sounding "Taps." Event speaker will be SFC John Adams, who is currently on active duty in the Army and based in Indianapolis. He was awarded the Bronze Star in Iraq. The Army produced a video about him that will be shown to the students.

Ceremonies for the public will be held at the Civil War Monument on the courthouse lawn at 11 a.m. A wreath will be placed at the monument, a call to arms and firing of guns by the honor guard will also take place.

Camden

Camden American Legion Post 413 and the community are sponsoring a Veteran's Day program at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Camden Community Building. All veterans and their families and men and women currently serving in the military, along with the public, are invited to attend. Elementary school children will be making posters and writing poems and stories to honor veterans.

Burlington

Veterans in the Burlington community will be honored at a Veteran's Day program set for Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Burlington Community Park Building.

Hosted by the Burlington Masonic Lodge in cooperation with Burlington American Legion Post 414, this program will be an opportunity for people to show their patriotism and give thanks to men and women who have helped make this country great and preserve our freedoms.

All veterans, their families and the public are invited to attend. A free light meal will precede the program. Larry Lowry, Cass County Veteran's Services Officer, will be speaker.
