Third-grade classes recently finished a section about government. Teachers Susan Kahler, Tana Lehr, Sherri Conner and Jill Routt were given permission by principal Bill Shidler to conduct a mock presidential election for the entire school.

Students were in charge of registering everyone to vote, decorating ballot boxes, counting votes and posting election results on the bulletin board outside room 207.

Lehr's class was in charge of election polls for first, second, and third-grade classes. Kahler's class ran a second voting center located in the science lab for fourth and fifth-graders.

"Voting is a civic duty and it is important for children to emulate what parents should do." Shidler said. "Children should take part in this historic vote."

Election results were 361 for Democrat Barack Obama and 280 for Republican John McCain.
