A call-out for new and current volunteers is being issued by the Wabash & Erie Canal Association for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Canal Interpretive Center on Washington Street in Delphi.

All persons interested in Delphi Historic Trails and activities at Canal Park and the Interpretive Center museum are invited.

Volunteers help with festivals, act as docents, build and maintain trails, plant flowers, do carpentry and painting, develop exhibits and work on historic restorations projects.

"Our volunteers come in all sizes and ages and with varied backgrounds," president Dan McCain said. "Some bring their family members and some come just to share similar interests with others."

In anticipation of a real operational canal boat next summer, the association is looking for recruits willing to become canal boat captains. Rides have been offered in past summers on a pontoon boat but next June the authentically replicated boat arrives. It is being built in Albany, N.Y.

The youth education program also is in need of several guides. McCain said the Interpretive Center has become a popular place to bring children, especially fourth graders studying Indiana history. Hundreds of school children from Carroll and surrounding counties come in spring and fall to learn about the canal and enjoy the trails.

"We need a volunteer coordinator, perhaps a retired teacher, to help schedule tours, gather input and solicit additional volunteers for the expected onslaught of school tours," McCain said.

On a regular basis the Canal Association needs individuals or couples to help greet the public during Interpretive Center public hours. At a minimum the museum is open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 1-4 p.m.

Those who are interested in volunteering but cannot attend the meeting can call (765) 412-4308.
