Delphi shut out in season finale
Despite losing three of four games after a 4-0 start, the Tipton Blue Devils football team insured that the visiting Oracles would not earn their first win. The Blue Devils intercepted a pass on the Oracles' third play from scrimmage and converted that early turnover into a 7-0 lead that grew to a 42-0 victory.
With a 7-0 lead already in the bag the Blue Devils started their next drive at their own 40-yard line. They took seven plays to punch it in for a 14-0 lead late in the first period. Delphi had managed just six plays from scrimmage for minus five yards.
The next time the Oracles had the ball they set up a screen pass on third and seven. Everything went as planned until the intended receiver dropped a sure first down pass, forcing a punt. Tipton capitalized on Delphi's inability to execute two plays later when QB Jake Dye passed to Seth Jacobs for a 69-yard touchdown to push the lead to 21-0.
Unable to get a first down for the fourth time in four tries the Oracles punted from deep in their end of the field. A personal foul against the Oracles on the return gave the Blue Devils a short field to work with. They marched 42 yards in eight plays to extend the lead to 28-0. Just over five minutes remained in the half.
Once again the Oracles could not move the ball. A high snap messed with the timing of the Oracle punt squad. The snap forced the punter, Dustin Salyer, to hurry the kick and he got off a short kick. The coverage overran the kick and when it was caught the returner was already behind several Oracles. He ran it back for a touchdown with four minutes left in the half. The score was now 35-0. Delphi had managed one first down and 11 yards of offense while Tipton had earned six first downs and 217 yards.
Tipton had the ball only one time in the third, but that one time was enough for the Blue Devils to run nearly half the time off the clock and push the lead to 42-0.
In the final period a Tipton fumble was recovered by Shane Hyman of Delphi to stifle the last Blue Devil drive.
The first round of the sectional will be played on Berto Field when Delphi entertains Seeger, who comes into the game with a 6-3 record. The game will be a 7 p.m. start time.
