Artist-in-residence
Randy Beard, pictured with guitar, was an artist-in-residence at Camden Early Childhood Center, Delphi Community Elementary School, and Delphi Community Middle School last week. His mission is "lyrical literacy" - promoting reading and writing through interactive music. At each workshop, he took something that students had written as a class, and made it into a song - on the spot. In Carrie Geheb's kindergarten class, shown above, the theme of the song was "What I know about bats." He also asked each student to tell what he or she likes to do, and turned that into a song. He demonstrated that songs help students learn by singing a jingle about Indiana symbols, such as the state flower. Beard and students at CECC and DCES performed for parents in evening programs.
