Trail of Death

Canal Association board members Brian Stirm (left) and Mark A. Smith are flanking one of 15 Trail of Death signs erected recently in Carroll County. The new signs are in honor of the 170th anniversary of the Trail of Death, a forced march involving the Potawatomi from the Rochester-Plymouth area of Indiana. Stirm erected the signs in September in preparation for a caravan from Rochester to Quincy, Ill. No tax dollars were used in the funding of the signs. Funding was provided by private individuals including Mike White, Bishop Higi of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette, two local DAR Chapters, Brenda Crume, Bob and Marlene Peterson, and Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Inc. The signs extend from the easternmost part of the canal towpath to Bicycle Bridge Road. A reception for the caravan, involving a tour of the Canal Interpretive Center, was held on Sept. 22, while a documentary on the Trail was filmed. Photo provided
