Camden and Delphi American Legion posts will host Carroll County candidate debates Oct. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will be held at the Camden Community Building.

Dr. Thomas Brodar will be the moderator. Questions will be posed by a threeperson panel. No candidate will be allowed to view questions before the debate, according to Brodar. Only the people on the panel will have access to them.

"It's all about how they think on their feet, "Brodar said. "How do their brains work?"

The debates will be free and open to the public. The public can E-mail questions to Brodar prior to the event. His Email address is brodar@ffni.com. The panel will then screen the questions and choose whether to present them to the candidates. Audience comments will not be accepted during the debate.

Brodar said the American Legions are sponsoring the discussions in order to educate the public.

"It is commonly thought that an educated electorate is a qualified electorate," Brodar said. "In a democracy, we get the government we deserve. In theory, the better educated the electorate, the better the government."

According to Brodar, Legion members hope people will come early, stay late, interact and discuss the issues at length.

The Legion Auxiliary will offer light refreshments.
