Beginning Sept. 2, the Burlington Community Library will hold a Homework Help Night on Tuesdays from 5-7 p.m. at the library during the school year. Students can come to receive help from an adult on homework assignments and research projects. This is also a great avenue for students to help other students.
The library has available a computer with DSL Internet access, a brand new complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica, as well as the Encyclopedia Britannica on CD ROM for all ages.
There is no fee for this program.
The library is looking for additional student and adult volunteers. Anyone interested in helping, should contact Adrea at 566-3166.
The library is participating in the "Carroll County on the Same Page" program. Copies of this year's book, "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle," by Barbara Kingsolver are available for check out.
Many new titles are being added to the library shelves. Come by and see what your local library has to offer!
The library will be closed Sept. 1 for Labor Day. Fall business hours go into effect when the library re-opens Sept. 2 Hours are Mon. through Thurs., 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Fri. 10 to 6, and Sat. 10 to 5.
Public libraries are centers for early childhood literacy. Children get ready to read long before they start school. Libraries offer books, programs, and other resources to help children of all ages get ready to read.
Childrens librarian Marcia Sledd will host Story Times from 7 to 7:30 p.m. each Tuesday for families and Thursdays for children. Ageappropriate stories, activities and songs for babies are from 9:30 to 10 a.m., toddlers from 10 to 11 and pre-school from 11:30 to 12:15 p.m.
Effective Sept. 1, fines for overdue books, magazines, audio books and music CDs will increase from five to 10 cents per day. Overdue fines for movies will remain at $1 and Red Hot Books will remain at 25 cents.

The library will be closed Saturday, Aug. 30, and Monday Sept. 1, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
Winter hours will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Winter hours are: Monday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library is closed on Wednesdays.
Come in and check out our bulletin boards, full of pictures from this summer's reading program and art classes. The photos are located in the children's library and the downstairs hallway. Art class students may pick up their completed projects at the main desk.
National Grandparents Day originated with Marian Mc- Quade, a housewife in Fayette County, W.Va. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to gain wisdom and heritage from their grandparents' lives.
In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
Celebrate Grandparents Day at storytime. Grandma and Grandpa (and other special people) are invited to storytime to share their own tales from childhood. Preschool storytime is Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m.
