Waist high runoff water, flooded basements, failed septic systems and possible well contamination in the Burrows community brought 14 concerned residents before the County Commissioners Monday morning.

"This is an emergency situation," spokesperson Susie Keeler said, while describing local residential devastation from recent water run-off generated from 200 adjacent farm acres.

Chronic flooding recently became intolerable flooding with the recent six-inch rainfall, all the result of roadside ditches and culverts filling up with soil over decades without any count maintenance.

The Commissioners promised a quick response to attend to a situation that some claim represents fifty years of neglect.

They can scale buildings with a single bound. No, they're not superman, they are the Burlington High Rise Rescue Team.

Seven members of the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department formed a high rise rescue team. This team specializes in rescue techniques involving tall buildings over two stories high or grain bins and elevators.

Debris may still line the creek bank along the Wildcat with the remains of the razed Burlington school building evident less than a 1/4 mile from St. Rd. 29, nevertheless the process of clean up is underway.

Emergency measures were adopted at the Whiteman Elevator on Saturday when farmers swamped the elevator with some 15,000 bushels of wheat. The harvest was deposited in the streets near the elevator from where it was loaded into nine waiting railroad cars and some 20 or 30 trucks. Unseasonable rain forced last minute harvesting resulting in the unusual method of handling the grain. Work continued far into the night, with the final loading finished around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday. Those who viewed the golden mounds of grain stretching down the streets were made aware of the productivity of Carroll County.

The Deer Creek swimming pool is becoming one of the most popular places in the community. Many people are coming from places that do not have the exceptional advantages that the Deer Creek pool affords.

The pool has been in fine condition this season. The fact that the water is constantly flowing over the dam carrying away the impurities keeps the pool in sanitary condition. In addition to this the plugs are opened once a week to allow a complete change of the water.

The bottom of the pool is covered with a coat of sofe, fine sand that extends for some distance up the creek.

The dance sponsored by Billy Dern, held at the K. of P. Hall every Saturday night, has been attracting good crowds. Doc. Morris and his chocolate playboys furnish the music for both square and round dancing. The admission price is very small and Billy invites you to go up to the K. of P. Hall and enjoy a good band.

Frightened by a Pennsylvannia freight train a horse driven by Joseph Scott, of Deer Creek, ran away on the road about a quarter of a mile south of Lincoln and dashed under a culvert about three feet high and six feet wide into which it was wedged so tight that it required 15 men with ropes and other tackle to extricate him. With Scott in the rig was his wife and both received slight injuries when the horse ran away.
