'Summer in a Jar' is coming to Flora Public Library

2008-08-06 / Community

Joanne Lytton, Consumer and Family Science specialist with the Carroll County Cooperative Extension, will present "Summer in a Jar" on Monday Aug. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Flora Public Library.

This is another in the series of events planned by the Camden, Delphi, and Flora libraries for the third annual Carroll County on the Same Page program.

The growing season is winding down and suddenly it is time to manage all the garden produce cultivated since spring. Canned food from a garden is like "summer in a jar" during the winter months.

Lytton will cover a variety of topics related to contemporary methods of home canning, including canning tomatoes, canning vegetables, making pickles, and freezing produce. Basic instructions and keys to success and safety will ease the way for first-time canners as well as veterans. This is an opportunity to have questions and produce problems addressed by an expert.

Lytton will also check dial gauge canners to make sure they are operating properly, so bring them along. There is a $5 fee for this service.

"Animal, Vegetable, Miracle," by Barbara Kingsolver is the 2008 Carroll County on the Same Page selection. It is the entert aining, informative true story of one year in the life of a family who made a commitment to eat food produced locally, including food they raised themselves or purchased from other neighborhood producers. Copies of the book are available at the three public libraries and are available for checkout to anyone in the county.
