The 2008 Summer Olympics will begin on Aug. 8 in Beijing, China. The significance of that date is closer to home for Elaine Smith of Flora. She will be 88 on 08-08-08. In China, eight is a lucky number. Elaine said she considers herself to be a lucky person. "I was blessed with a good husband, two wonderful daughters, and a nice life," she said. Her hobbies have included sewing and traveling. She and her husband, Jean, both graduated from high school in 1938 and were married 67 years. He died in January. Elaine has five grandchildren and EIGHT great-grandchildren. There will be a family get-together to mark her special birthday. It will be held on that lucky date, 08-08- 08.
