Car seat clinic is Aug. 2
Carroll County Farm Bureau Inc. will host its fourth Child Safety Event at Flora Community Park on Saturday Aug. 2, from 8 a.m. to noon, in cooperation with the SAFE KIDS organization of Carroll and White counties.
Child restraints will be checked by certified Child Passenger Technicians for proper installation and misuse. Sharon Hartwell LPN, CPST from White County Memorial Hospital Permanent Fitting Station will be one of those technicians available to assist with the event.
"Last year we inspected 75 child restraints," Hartwell said. "We look for different types of things that put the child and family at risk for severe injury or death if they are in a vehicle crash."
Items needed for the participants are their vehicle, the child, and the restraint. Hartwell said the child must be present for the inspections so technicians can make sure parents are properly using the restraint and the child restraint is the right one for the child.
Child passenger brochures and pamphlets will be available.
The event is for parents, grandparents, and caregivers.
IDENT-A-KID will be on hand to provide identification cards for children. In an emergency, parents can provide officials with vital information about their children immediately. The cost is three cards for $10 or five cards for $15.
According to current Indiana law, all children ages eight to 16 are required to be in either child restraints or seat belts at all times. Children birth to age eight are required to be in a specifically designed child restraint seat and properly using that seat.
In Indiana, over 5,000 children were injured in motor vehicle collisions in 2007. Forty nine of those injuries were fatal. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the United States for children between the ages of two and 14.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) "child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers in passenger cars."
Hartwell said misuse of child restraints remains a problem. If parents have questions about installation or use of car seats they should come to the event for answers.
