Helping hands save treasurer's office

Given a threat from the treasurer that her office would not have enough time to prepare two sets of property tax bills this year, a group of concerned Carroll County citizens volunteered to stuff envelopes and do whatever treasurer Jane Brewington deemed necessary to put tax bills in the mail as soon as possible. The volunteers, mostly from the Radnor United Methodist Church but joined by other residents, met in Brewington's office Thursday morning to work until closing time to accomplish as much as possible. "My church is supporting me," Radnor Church member Brewington said. Tax payments will be due Sept. 19. Volunteer Pat Mills said she called the office and offered to help as did Sharon Christiansen. "We are doing this to save the county," said volunteer Krenta Keller, who brought along her husband, Don. Brewington said a group would be needed next week again because she has between 10,000 and 50,000 bills to prepare to send out. "We aren't half-way done printing the bills yet." Additional volunteers included Mary Nell and Jack Hiatt and courthouse custodian Sheryl Shockley, not pictured. Brewington said those wishing to volunteer could call her office at (765) 564-3446.
