Second annual ArchiCamp offered

2008-06-04 / Community

A day camp focusing on landmarks and history will be offered in Carroll County.

ArchiCamp is for children ages 8-12, and will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, June 24 and 25, with headquarters at the Canal Interpretive Center in Delphi. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It is being offered by Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Inc., Delphi Preservation Society, and Adams Mill (Mark and Jill Scharer).

On the first day, campers will travel back in time to the 19th century when they visit Adams Mill in Cutler. There kids will try their hand at historic building trades like sawing logs, splitting shingles, and cutting wooden pegs. After a hard day's work they'll cool off with an inner tube ride around the mill on Wildcat Creek.

On the second day, in Delphi, campers will learn about local historic bridges. They will construct their own model bridge and test it for strength.

This is the second year for the Delphi ArchiCamp. Winner of a prestigious award from the American Association of State and Local History, Archi- Camps encourage children to use their imaginations and powers of observation while teaching them about history, architecture, and renovation.

Cost of the camp is $35 and includes refreshments, educational materials, and souvenirs. Lunch is provided June 24; campers should bring a sack lunch June 25.

Enrollment for the camp is limited to 20 children. Reservations must be made by June 20; contact Suzanne Stanis at Historic Landmarks Foundation, 800-450-4534 or stanis@ historiclandmarks.org.
