Lady Oracles earn spot in championship
The Delphi softball team squeaked out a nail-biter last Wednesday night in the semifinal round of the Class 2A Sectional 37 at Clinton Central. The Oracles defeated Seeger 1- 0 to earn a berth in the championship game Thursday night against the host team.
Seeger (15-12) gave the State's Class 2A's #12-ranked Lady Oracles all that they would want in this one, holding their mighty offense to just four hits and not allowing what would be the only run of the game until the fifth inning.
Delphi junior pitcher Brittney Atwood (16-7) and Patriot senior pitcher Kalli Hollis (11- 6) were equally impressive on the mound with each carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
The Lady Oracles finally created some offense in the fifth when Leslie Kayser singled with one out and was lifted for courtesy-runner Kara Laxson, who then advanced to second on pinch-hitter Morgan Lavy's perfectly executed sacrifice bunt to bring up the top of the batting order.
Whitney Arion singled to left to advance Laxson to third, when Kayla Yates then camethrough with a clutch infield hit to score Laxson with what would prove to be the gamewinning run.
Atwood added a single in the sixth inning for Delphi's final hit, while closing the door on Seeger over the final two innings to earn her 16th victory of the season on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out nine.
With the semi-final victory, Delphi (22-8) advanced to play Clinton Central for the championship round on Thursday.
