Comet staff report

A clean-up project is beginning on the Tippecanoe River to remove debris from the recent floods. The first clean-up is set for June 7 at 9 a.m. and anyone who would like to help is asked to meet at the public access site at the bridge between roads 1200 and 1250. The effort will be concentrated for the two mentioned roads and the area of Horseshoe Bend. Instructions and supplies will be given out at this time.

Clean-up organizers are Linda and Bill Lerch of Lake County. After putting in nearly 40 years at a steel mill the Lerches bought a retirement cottage along the river in April 2007. Eight months later, the cottage was totaled in the floods.

"I want to help those who lost so much, and who lost their primary residence," said Linda Lerch. "I also hope this will lead to more clean-ups."

If anyone would like to donate items, contact Linda Lerch at seedlady2.1@netzero.com or phone 1-219-962-8014. Needed items include rubber gloves, garbage bags, disinfecting wipes, portable toilet, pick-up trucks driven by volunteers to pick up garbage bags, and food/drinks for volunteers. This is strictly an outdoor project for mainly along the banks and streets.
