German

Delphi Community High School announced the two top academic students for the 2007-08 school year. Valedictorian Kylee German and salutatorian Shane Evans spoke during commencement last week.

 

Valedictorian

German is the daughter of Randy and Nina German of Delphi. She was on the distinguished honor roll all four years and earned seven varisty sports letters. Her school activities included Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a student resource time coordinator, National Honor Society, Key Club, Freshman Mentors Program, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Varsity D Club, French Club, Academic Super Bowl on the math team, Battle of the Books and choir.

She played basketball for four years and was captain one year. She was a four-year member of the golf team, was on the track team for two years and played softball one year. As a golf team member she was recognized for best putting average, lowest gross score and most improved player. She was also most improved player twice in basketball. She earned Academic All-State in both sports.

Evans

Her extra-curricular activities included being a leadership team member and praise team member with her church youth group and missions trips to Jamaica and Kentucky. She was a Junior Rotarian, helped with two Habitat for Humanity homes, helped sell daffodils for the American Cancer Society, and was a PRIDE Day participant.

 

She was awarded the Bertha Mears Memorial Scholarship, Hoosier Scholar Award and was a Lilly Endowment Community Scholar for Carroll County.

German's special honors included being a delegate for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, Lugar Symposium and Hoosier Girls' State, and a nominee for Academic All-Stars and Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen awards.

She was awarded Excellence in French three years, the USMC Scholastic Excellence Award, Camden Women's Literary Club Award, the Bradshaw English Award four times, two Scholarship D awards, four awards for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics, and was student of the month.

German will attend Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion this fall on the Lilly Founation scholarship. She will major in mathematics education and plans to become a junior high or high school math teacher.

Salutatorian

Evans is the son of Shawn and Shannon Evans of Delphi. He has one sister, Hannah.

Evans was involved in football, wrestling, Boy Scouts, spring musicals and Varsity D all four years of his high school career. He performed with the Entertainers for three years. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout his senior year.

He was co-captain of the football squad his junior and senior years. He was an Indianapolis Colts Academic All-Star and Academic All-State his senior year.

In wrestling he was Hoosier Conference champion in the 160-pound weight class as a junior and was co-captain and Academic All-State as a senior.

Evans received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award his senior year. He was in the National Honor Society and was active on the Academic Superbowl math, science and interdisciplinary teams, Key Club serving as treasurer his senior year, Spanish Club holding the offices of secretary and vice president, fall plays, Battle of the Books, Every 15 Minutes, the Rube Goldberg competition, junior marshals and yearbook.

Evans served an internship with the Carroll County Prosecutor's Office as a senior. He mentored students and was a D.A.R.E. role model his junior and senior years.

He was a Hoosier Boys' State delegate and received the Rotary Youth Leadership Award his junior year.

Evans will major in biology and chemistry at Wabash College this fall. He also hopes to wrestle for the college team, the Little Giants.

"I had a great time in high school and the friendships and memories will last forever," Evans said. "The impact the students of DCHS made on me is amazing, and we had come together as a big family - a family I will miss and cherish dearly. It was a fun time in which I learned more than academics, I learned social skills, fun activities, hard work, and team work. I love every member of the class of 2008 and their legacy will live in the school and in me forever."
