Delphi's George advances to regional

2008-05-21 / Sports

The Delphi boys and girls track and field teams finished off their seasons last week with sectional action. The girls finished 10th and the boys finished 11th.

Olivia George was Delphi's lone regional qualifier. She finished third in the high jump with a career best leap of 5'2". Her jump was the same height as the first and second place competitors but she had more misses than the other two. The mark of 5'2" has her seeded second in the regional, along with four other competitors at the same height. To qualify for state, George must place in the top three.

All three of the girls relays ran their best times of the year.

The 400-meter relay team (George, Mara Burton, Alisha Myers, and Chelsey Marcotte) finished fifth, the 1600-meter relay team (Kari Lake, George, Denise Kendall, and Marcotte) finished sixth, and the 3200- meter relay team (Grace Currie, Hannah Evans, Kendall, and Arielle Brosman) finished seventh. Kylee German had her best throw of the year in shot put, finishing eighth. Grace Currie and Hannah Evans finished first and second in their section of the 800- meter run, but their times were not fast enough to place.

After the boys sectional was cancelled on Thursday, they competed on Friday at Lafayette Jefferson. The 3200- meter (J.D. Huffer, Zach Schnepp, Kris Bender, and Ryan Everett) and 1600-meter (Huffer, A.J. Erskin, Paul Knight, and Jonathan Hufford) relay teams both finished seventh and the 400 meter relay team (Clint McLeland, Spencer Conner, Josh Ridgway, and Seferino Cervantes) placed eighth. Jonathan Hufford wrapped up a good career at Delphi with an eighth place in the 200-meter dash. A.J. Erskin qualified for the finals in the 110-meter high hurdles, but was interfered with in the finals and didn't place. Freshmen Nathan Dubes did not place but bettered his best pole vault by 18" with a season best vault of 9'0".

The track teams conclude their season this Wednesday with an awards banquet at 5:30 p.m. in the high school commons.
