Saturday is canal/trails flower planting day
"May is a time for volunteers to beautify Delphi's Historic Trails and Canal Park," said Canal Board president Dan McCain.
Flower planting will begin at 9 a.m. at Canal Park. Groups and individuals of all ages are welcome.
The Canal Association will have some flowers for volunteers to plant. The public also may bring flats of flowers and even offer cuttings and starts of perennials. Volunteers should also bring gloves and planting tools with their names or distinctive markings on them. Call Pat Draper at 765-564-3676 for more information.
"If you use the trails and love the setting of some special place, consider adopting it for the season," McCain said. "If you pick a spot somewhere along the Delphi Trials, let us know and we will mark it with a 'Trail Treasurers' sign. Care should be exercised to avoid areas that may flood or where foot traffic would be excessive."
Pat Draper and Chris Neumann are the coordinators for the flower planting.
An alternate work crew will meet at the north end of Carrollton Bridge, five miles north of Delphi, at 9 a.m. to work adjacent the historic site of the Wabash & Erie Canal Lock #32. This site received help from volunteers in April and is likely to be completed by volunteers in one more morning's efforts.
Volunteers at Carrollton will mostly be clearing and completing the trail that will circle the three-acre site encompassing both sides of Towpath Road. Wear durable clothing and bring gloves, pruners, saws, and rakes.
These sites being developed encompass land donated last winter by landowners representing the Grantham and Johnsen families.
A dedication of the Carrollton historic sites, the Wabash River Trail, and the rehabilitated Carrollton Bridge will be on Sunday, June 15, in the afternoon.
