Comet staff report

Leazenby Leazenby Carroll County Sheriffs Deputy Grant Davidson received a report about an Internet E-mail scam last Friday.

A local resident received an E-mail threatening their life if money was not given to the sender. The E-mail, with an unknown origin, states "someone you know has paid us to kill you." The sender insists the recipient send $5,000 to save their life. Instructions are for the recipient to send $2,000 first and then follow that with a $3,000 amount.

Maj. Tobe Leazenby said recipients of the spam-type Email should not be intimidated, should not send money, and should report receipt of this type of scare-tactic communication to authorities.

"We are attempting to locate the origin of the E-mail," Leazenby said.

He said this was the second report in the community. The first report was received two weeks ago. Det. Steve Mullin was assigned to the investigation.

Leazenby urged anyone who has received this or something similar to call the sheriffs department at (765) 564-2413 or E-mail him at tleazenby@cacoshrf. com to file a report. Another resource for the public to report this type of harassing E-mail is the Federal Bureau of Investigation Web site at www.fbi.gov.

"My concern is that a senior citizen will believe what they read in this E-mail, feel threatened and send the money," Leazenby concluded. "If there is any question about an E-mail asking for money and or threatening harm, we should be called. We don't want anyone to fall victim to this and feel afraid in their own home."
